  Your DMA disk errors can probably be avoided by going to the BIOS in order
to change settings for that disk (instead of "UDMA" try various "PIO" modes) .

  The delays are probably caused by DNS troubles. SSH and Sendmail try to
resolve the client IP address by default. If local clients are connecting,
make sure that their addresses have entries in your private DNS server (or
at least that your DNS cache points to a server that answers "no, sorry, I
don't have any record for that address") .
