Hi all,

I caught a killer deal for an HP DL145 rack mount server with a 1.6 GHz Opteron not really thinking about what I was buying at the time because I needed a replacement server immediately for a customer and that was the only one in stock in my price range (got it for $600). Now I'm looking for a few more rackmounts similar to the DL145 and have a bit of sticker shock after seeing current prices for said rack mounted servers (the cheapest DL145 I can find now is around $1000) - okay, "sticker shock" is a bit of an exaggeration, but I am looking for something in the $600-$800 range. The question is whether I should shop around and find an Opteron based system I'm comfortable with or simply buy something with a Xeon DP in it - or hell, even a regular Xeon. These systems will be used for some light http and some heavy perl/mysql webserving stuff (100 low traffic websites per machine, but some using blogging software like MovableType). I would also like to replace a DP PIV 2.8 Dell Precision I'm using as an email server for 400 pop/imap email accounts (running qmail/vpopmail/courier-imap) with a rackmount for space saving reasons. The real point or core question is whether the Opteron is worth it in performance terms. I've always liked AMD as the underdog, but here I really need bang for the buck on what I'm doing and if the bang isn't there, it's not worth it for me.

Any comments?
